Siv Juvik Tveitnes has led News Media alongside her role as Group CEO since Schibsted was organised into two divisions. She is now handing over responsibility for News Media to Steiro, while continuing as Group CEO.
”I am very pleased that Gard has accepted this role. He knows Schibsted extremely well and combines extensive editorial experience with a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the media industry. I cannot think of anyone better suited to guide our media brands through the next technological shift”, says Tveitnes.
Schibsted’s News Media division includes VG, Aftenposten, Bergens Tidende, Stavanger Aftenblad, E24, Podme, Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet and Omni, among others. The TV Media division is led by Mathias Berg and comprises Sweden’s TV4 and Finland’s MTV, which became part of Schibsted in the summer of 2025.
”Proud of everything we have achieved together”
Gard Steiro has served as Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of VG since January 2017.
”Gard has played a pivotal role in developing VG into the Nordic region’s strongest and most innovative digital news destination. He has also been a prominent voice and a driving force in exploring how AI and new technology can be used to develop journalism and improve the user experience. It is precisely this combination of experience and forward-thinking that we need to achieve our ambitions in the years ahead”, says Tveitnes.
For Steiro, the new role means leaving VG after 11 years. He first joined VG as News Editor in the summer of 2015, having previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Bergens Tidende.
”It has been an enormous privilege to serve as Editor-in-Chief of VG for almost ten years. My decision to leave is not because I lack motivation or feel that my work here is done, but because I believe this is the right opportunity to use my commitment and experience to help develop all of Schibsted’s media brands. I want to thank my colleagues at VG. I am proud of everything we have achieved together”, says Steiro.
Takes on new role immediately
Steiro has been a member of the leadership team for Schibsted’s news media operations since the company became a dedicated media group in the summer of 2024. He therefore already has a good understanding of the division he is now taking responsibility for.
”Schibsted’s media houses are important institutions in society. My most important task will be to create the conditions for our Editors-in-Chief to strengthen journalism and preserve the distinct identity of each media brand. We have a strong foundation, but defending independent, editor-led media in a rapidly changing world will require a great deal from all of us. This challenge is something I am deeply motivated by, and I look forward to taking on the work together with all the talented people across Schibsted”, says Steiro.
He takes on his new role immediately, while continuing as Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of VG until a successor is in place. He will also lead the process of recruiting a new leader for VG.
”I will spend the initial period listening to the leaders of the different companies and functions across Schibsted. I am particularly looking forward to getting to know our Swedish media brands and the Swedish media market better”, says Steiro.
For Group CEO Siv Juvik Tveitnes, the new leadership structure will allow her to shift more of her attention to other priorities.
”With Gard in place as Head of News Media, I will be able to dedicate more of my time to leading and developing Schibsted as a whole and realising the opportunities we have across News Media and TV Media, and exploring new opportunities for the Group”, says Tveitnes.
