Schibsted Media becomes Schibsted again

Today, Schibsted Media becomes Schibsted again as the media group becomes the sole owner of the name. The name change is natural as the publicly listed Schibsted Marketplaces officially changes its name to Vend and becomes a pure Nordic marketplace company.

The media group Schibsted, founded in 1839 and today home to some of the Nordic region’s largest media houses, is now reclaiming its classic and concise name after a year as Schibsted Media.

“Schibsted is a historic name and a brand that inspires trust, both in the Nordic countries and internationally, and is most strongly associated with newspapers and news media. As a brand, Schibsted stands for innovation, integrity, and a strong journalistic tradition. That’s why it’s important to us that Schibsted once again becomes our group name – clearly associated with media. It gives us a stronger, more distinct brand”, says Group CEO Siv Juvik Tveitnes.

Two separate companies

It was in June last year that Schibsted was split into two companies. Schibsted’s main owner, the Tinius Trust, then acquired the media operations and created a dedicated, foundation-owned media company, which was given the temporary name Schibsted Media. The group includes several well-known brands, including Aftonbladet, VG, Aftenposten, SvD, E24, Bergens Tidende, Stavanger Aftenblad, Omni, and Podme.

Remaining within the publicly listed Schibsted were the major Nordic marketplaces Blocket (Sweden), Finn (Norway), Tori (Finland), and DBA (Denmark), and today Schibsted Marketplaces officially changes its name to Vend.

“This is a milestone for both us and our colleagues at Vend. It allows us to clarify our position as a media group, while Vend is now freer to continue developing as a dedicated player in digital marketplaces and to further build a unique position in the Nordics”, says Group CEO Siv Juvik Tveitnes.

In practice, the change means that the media group now solely owns the website Schibsted.com and the Schibsted brand across social media platforms.

Acquisition underscores a clear goal

As a dedicated media company wholly owned by the Tinius Trust, Schibsted’s ambition is clear: news is the core business, and the mission of its media houses is to deliver independent journalism that strengthens democracy.

There is also a clear goal for Schibsted to become the leading media destination in the Nordics – an ambition underscored this past winter by the agreement to acquire TV4 in Sweden and MTV in Finland from Telia Company, a transaction expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025, pending customary regulatory approvals.
