“Reaching our goal six months early shows the strong appeal of our journalism. Our readers are looking for both deeper understanding and sharp insights – and it is precisely that combination we are proud to deliver,” says Lisa Irenius, Publisher.
Several factors lie behind this success. In recent years, Svenska Dagbladet has invested heavily in strengthening its journalism, across politics, business, culture and lifestyle – in both text and audio formats. At the same time, the digital experience has been improved, not least through a more relevant and expanded front page.
“Journalism and the digital news experience are crucial for growth. At the same time, we have developed new digital offerings, including partnerships with other media companies. We have also built close and creative collaboration between our subscription, product development and data analytics teams,” says Christoffer Lindvall, Head of Subscription Business at SvD.
Innovative technical solutions
Growth has also been driven by innovative technical solutions, such as a dynamic paywall that won first prize at the INMA Global Awards (Best initiative to grow subscriptions). Since May, SvD has also introduced a new editorial organization, with strengthened news coverage, better conditions for in-depth and storytelling journalism, as well as enhanced digital development.
“The past year has been one of the strongest growth periods in Svenska Dagbladet’s history in terms of new digital subscribers – even stronger than during the pandemic. And importantly, this growth is not driven by a shift from print to digital, but rather represents true net growth. At the same time, digital subscription revenues have increased by 14 percent over the past year, driven by volume growth,” says Christoffer Lindvall.
Today, 70 percent of Svenska Dagbladet’s subscribers are digital. This strong growth provides a solid foundation for the next step – to further deepen the journalism and strengthen the relationship with readers.
“SvD exists to give people insights about the world and themselves, and we aim to become even better at that going forward. There is a strong demand for journalism that provides context and new perspectives – both serious and lighter – and that can enrich everyday life while also contributing to a more constructive public debate,” says Lisa Irenius.
